He said that regional collaboration i was imperative to create a dynamic knowledge of the mountain, sharing and networking among various institutions in the Indian Himalayas through consortium-based research and knowledge networking. He also appealed for starting such long-term project programmes. Governor of Sikkim Lakshman Prasad Acharya said the Himalayas held an important role in saving our environment. Considered an extremely fragile ecosystem, presently the Indian Himalayan region was struggling on multiple environmental issues due to rampant urbanization, ecological degradation, tourism and hydropower projects.
The indiscriminate exploitation of mountains in the name of development was steadily weakening the mountains and inviting natural calamities. There is a need to develop new paradigms of long-term conservation and sustainable development with an ecological balance that helped in the economic interest of not only the region but also the nation as a whole.
The Governor inaugurated the Orchidarium developed by Sikkim Regional Center. This orchidarium has preserved 115 species of orchids found in the Sikkim Himalayan region and this collection leads to18 percent of the orchid diversity available in the state of Sikkim.
These species will be available for future research work and display to various stakeholders.
