The 2nd StartUp20 meeting under India's G20 presidency concludes at Gangtok

The 2nd StartUp20 Engagement Group meeting under India's presidency concluded at  Gangtok, Sikkim today. Earlier in the morning, the task forces de-briefing session by Indian and International Chairs was also held in the event.

The second day of the Startup20 Sikkim Sabha, began with the taskforce members, chairs, co-chairs, and Startup20 team heading straight to the five cafes. The five taskforces delved deeper into the discussion on the policy paper framework and strategized recommendations for way forward through detailed deliberations. 

The delegates then headed to Chintan Bhawan for debriefing from the five taskfoces’ café discussions. For the Finance taskforce, Mr. Panneerselvam, CEO of Technogen Inc, emphasised the need to tap opportunities through bringing the various startup stakeholders together, which are currently working in silos. Through this, the taskforce will enable the stakeholders to benefit from the policy actions of the taskforce. The taskforce is also working towards creating a Finance Template for G20 nations which will entail funding status, sectors where startups are concentrated, challenges, among other focus points. 

The Inclusion taskforce discussions were debriefed by Ms. Harjinder Kaur Talwar, the chair of the Inclusion taskforce, and Ms. Giulia Fernanda Giovanna from the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia. They highlighted that the data gaps in the startup ecosystem and suggested that collaboration with other G20 countries for data collection will help bridge the gap. Knowledge sharing through startup showcasing, leveraging international events, and bilateral talks between the G20 nations were also suggested by the taskforce. 
The Sustainability taskforce debrief was presented by Mr. Vivek Kumar Jha, Social Scientist, and Ms. Regina Espinoza Athie, founder of Cuéntame, Mexico. The key takeaways from the discussion were to create themes within startups working on sustainability can prosper through focusing on profitability, working on creating definitions for SDG based startups, focused incubators for sustainable entrepreneurship and skill building. 

Dr. Shivakaran, the Alliance co-chair, and Mr. Vikram Khurana, CEO of Toronto Business Development Centre, debriefed the discussions of the Alliance taskforce. The members agreed to work towards creating an International Startup Alliance, a team with members from G20 nations, who will identify global network and synchronize on the policy actions. Creating Global Network of Innovation Centres, a virtual platform to ensure implementation of free flow of funding, mentorship, best practices, etc. was also discussed in the meeting. 

The final taskforce debrief for Foundations was presented by Dr. Abha Rishi, co-chair of the Foundations taskforce, and Ms. Annelies in ‘t Veld, Senior Policy Advisor, Ministry of Economic Affairs & Climate policy, Netherlands. The taskforce is working on creating a global startup definitions framework to ensure ease of availing benefits for ecosystem entities. The taskforce will also propose encouraging multilateral organisations to adopt the framework for consistency.  
Dr. Tejbanta S. Chingtham, the CEO of the Atal Incubation Centre at Sikkim Manipal University Technology Business Incubation Foundation, highlighted the cultural and historic significance of Sikkim and thanked the delegates for their participation. The closing remarks were given by Dr. Chintan Vaishav, the Startup20 Chair, wherein he provided a timeline to the final communiqué and encouraged the participants to create linkages and amplify the Startup20 message.    In his closing remarks, Chair, StartUp20 Dr. Chintan Vaishnav said the StartUp20 team will prioritize the needs of the outcome of this meeting. Highlighting the need of engaging more StartUps, Dr. Chintan said the team will work through reaching out engaging startups more aggressively from next. Dr. Chintan also stated that virtualization format of these meetings will be encouraged in near future, "The linkage of StartUp20 between other engagement groups is also very important under the G20 presidency".

The second day of the Sikkim Sabha concluded with a cultural excursion to the Rumtek Monastery where the delegates visited the temples.
